Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was introduced to art from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was aware of her social circle and taught her to make use of art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house of a member of jury. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at a small production studio right out of school. In 1999, she founded her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
